Throughout the nation, the perception of cannabis has changed drastically with adult-use cannabis being legal in 23 states and counting. However, in a majority of states, this acknowledgement that it’s time to end the War on Drugs fails to reach the people actually being harmed by it.
Millions of individuals across the U.S. still bear the lifelong burden of having a cannabis record, and tens of thousands are actively serving sentences for cannabis-related convictions.
In order to adequately address the past harms of cannabis criminalization, legalization programs must provide retroactive relief through state-initiated record clearance and resentencing.
By erasing a criminal record, state-initiated record clearance is key to redressing the lasting harm and lingering barriers that cannabis criminal records impose to success.
State-initiated resentencing provides relief to individuals by requiring courts to reconsider cannabis-related sentences in states where these offenses would no longer warrant incarceration.
LPP works to advance cannabis policies that balance the needs of public safety with public interest, to develop a unified roadmap that drives toward fair and just policies that redress the harms of the failed war on drugs.
We provide technical assistance on a local, state, and federal level through statutory assessments, policy development and analysis, legislative strategy, campaign coordination, coalition support, and implementation consulting.
Our policy team works with stakeholders across the country to pass and implement bills that will (1) provide release for individuals still incarcerated for now legal activity, and (2) automatically clear those criminal convictions from records.
