THE IMPORTANCE OF COMMISSARY SUPPORT
Every day, cannabis prisoners struggle to afford basic necessities like nutritious food, hygiene products, and phone calls home due to low wages. In fact, the average wage in prison is between 13 cents and 52 cents per hour and with such minimal earnings, an inmate has to work for over 3 hours at the maximum average wage to afford a pouch of Bumblebee Tuna Fish or over 1 hour for a Forever stamp (see the sample commissary sheet below). Because inmate wages are so low, families — already facing financial hardship — must step in to support their loved ones, contributing to the $2.9 billion spent annually on commissary accounts and phone calls. More than half of these families are forced into debt to cover these costs.
By joining our email list, you can learn more about the actual costs of incarceration and how you can support our efforts to bring justice and relief to those still imprisoned for cannabis. Together, we can advocate for change and ensure no one is left behind.
